New York Highlights:

  • USS Comfort will be docking in the New York Harbor Pier 90 on Monday
  • Death toll = (prev. one day death toll = 100)
  • Stimulus package to send $5 billion dollars to NY; fails to address loss of revenue

United States Highlights:

  • According to University of Washington School of Medicine, the pandemic could kill 81,000 Americans (predicted range 38,000 to 162,000); peak = April 5 to 11; may not subside until June
  • Total death toll surpasses 1000 people

International Highlights:

  • China: studies indicate uncontrolled hypertension and diabetes are more likely to have severe symptoms and death; lockdown will be lifted on April 8, 2020; no new cases reported on March 19, 2020; borders are closed for all international residents and travelers
  • Iran: current recorded death toll = 2234 people; People’s Mojahedine Organization states death toll is 11,900 people; held under US sanctions until terrorism and nuclear programs are halted
  • Italy: highest international death toll = 8215 people; primarily tested those with severe symptoms — fatality rate seems higher since it does not include all infected; National Institute of Health’s report 85.6% of deaths were age >70 years old; 23% were age 65 to 70; half of the patients who died had 3 or more health conditions; 14 doctors have died; Italian culture is characterized by a high degree of social contact; lockdown ends 4/3/2020, but is likely to be extended; COVID-19 positive patients who violate lockdown face up to 5 years in prison
  • Spain: death toll = 4365 people
  • India: severity concerns secondary to high rates of tuberculosis, pneumonia, smoking and poor air quality ; predicting 10 million patients will require hospitalization (only 100,000 ICU beds available; 20,000 ventilators); currently there is limited testing; current death toll = 20; peak estimated May; concerns for hunger and poverty rise (government does have an emergency stock of grains and lentils for public distribution); stimulus package $20.6 billion (status = announced); there is a lack of protective personnel equipment that needs to be addressed
  • United Kingdom: death toll = 578 people; Dyson is pledging to produce 10,000 ventilators for the UK; it has named its new ventilator ‘The CoVent’
  • Greece: death toll = 27 people; Greece procured 5 tons of chloroquine from India; Greece has also started to produce chloroquine internally
  • South Korea: widespread testing including those with no symptoms; mortality rate = 0.6%

General Highlights:

  • Evidence regarding higher temperatures decreasing or halting COVID-19 are lacking
  • Average global death rate is estimated at 2 to 3%
  • Fever and dry cough are the primary symptoms; can take up to 14 days from infection to show symptoms
  • Take your temperature twice a day (China is requiring this for its citizens)

  • 385 deaths in New York — an increase of 100 deaths from yesterday. (1)
  • New York State is working to establish 1000-bed hospitals in each of the 5 boroughs, Nassau, Suffolk, Rockland counties. (1)
  • Counties will be risk-stratified (high-, medium-, low-risk) in the coming days. (2)
  • $2 trillion stimulus package approved by Senate yesterday; House to approve by Friday.
  • 2019 adjusted gross income <$75,000: will receive $1200 in the next 3 weeks; each child will receive $500. Check will be sent out automatically if you filed your taxes in 2018 and 2019. IRS has your bank account on file.
  • NYPresbyterian-Columbia is using 1 ventilator for 2 patients. The strategy is experimental. It requires that both patients have the same lung size and lung compliance, otherwise the approach is not beneficial. The average duration a COVID-19 patient requires ventilation is 11 to 21 days.
